The OOLER Sleep System: Is it Worth It?
August 27, 2020Reliefband Review: Is the Reliefband Worth Purchasing?
September 11, 2020Sleeptracker by Serta Simmons vs. Oura Ring
I decided to review Sleeptracker by Serta Simmons after my initial reviews of three of the most common wearable technologies utilized in the biohacking community: the Oura Ring, the Biostrap, and the WHOOP strap. I chose these, as they are heavily endorsed by influencers, but none of them have the mainstream recognition of the Fitbit or the Apple Watch. Also, I was already familiar with both the Fitbit and Apple Watch since I have owned both.
See the results of the Oura Ring vs. Biostrap vs. WHOOP below:

I will circle back to testing those products in a more rigorous way later on.
After showing how the Oura Ring thoroughly mopped the floor with Biostrap and WHOOP, I decided to compare it against another technology that claims to be validated with polysomnography: the Sleeptracker by Serta Simmons. Here is what Fullpower, the company that created the technology used in the Sleeptracker app, claims on its website:
“Medical-grade accuracy. For example, the Sleeptracker®-AI by Serta Simmons is clinically proven to monitor sleep patterns with an accuracy of over 90% for 90% of the population compared to medically operated professional polysomnography.”
Originally, I had planned to pit all four previously tracked technologies against each other, but decided against it for a few reasons: I wasn’t happy with Biostrap for many reasons detailed in my four-part review, and it left me with raw skin as well, and WHOOP wouldn’t pair after 20 days of not being used. Although I had followed all troubleshooting steps to no avail, the pairing lights wouldn’t come on with repeated tapping. At first, I had gotten nowhere with WHOOP customer service, so I decided to cancel my 6-month membership. WHOOP makes you pay out your commitment to turn off auto-renew. Meaning that if you want to try the device for 6 months and decide after 2 months you don’t like the WHOOP strap and decide to cancel your membership before its renewal, they charge you a lump sum for the remaining time. This is another entrapment tactic used during negative billing. However, WHOOP eventually sent me a new strap after I had canceled the membership, and I plan to use it for future experiments.
Sleeptracker vs. Oura Ring
First, let’s take a look at the user-friendliness and features of each device:

As the above shows, Oura offers significantly more features than the Sleeptracker app, but it is also over double the price. What matters the most is sleep tracking accuracy, so I set out to test the two devices each against each other for 30 days with my wife. Moreover, I made an effort to note the time I went to bed and woke up for as many days as possible (as did my wife), while noting as many observations as possible.
Here is my data:
Alex’s Data

I went to bed at 12:25 AM and woke up at 8:48 AM.
Oura recorded me as having gone to bed at 12:29 AM with a 9 min latency and woken up at 8:50 AM. Oura had recorded me as awake for 1hr 13 min. Sleeptracker recorded me as going to bed at 12:40 AM and waking up at 8:54 AM. Sleeptracker had me awake for 10min at the start and end of my sleep. I checked emails and responded to many of them, no less than four times throughout the night. |

Oura had me in bed at 12:15 AM and awake at 7:11 AM. Sleeptracker had me in bed at 12:25 AM and awake at 7:12 AM. Oura had me awake 52min, Sleeptracker 15min. I used the washroom once and checked emails in the night twice. The real value was likely somewhere between the two. |

I went to bed at 12:25 AM and woke up at 7:58 AM.
Oura had me in bed at 12:38 AM and awake at 7:58 AM. I did toss and turn quite a bit. Sleeptracker had me in bed at 12:48 AM and awake at 7:56 AM. In the night, I got up and used the bathroom at least once; I also answered and read emails twice. Oura recorded 1hr 20min awake time; Sleeptracker recorded 24min. It was definitely longer than 24min; I am not sure if it reached 1hr 20min. |

I put my phone down at 10:33 PM and was awake and reading emails 7:21 AM.
Oura recorded me as “trying to sleep” at 10:29 PM and awake at 7:14 AM. Sleeptracker had me asleep at 10:30 PM, while I was still reading, and asleep until 7:50 AM, when I had been awake for half an hour. It was very hot, and I woke up all through the night. Oura recorded me as awake for 2hr 36min, which is probably too long; Sleeptracker recorded me as awake for 32min, which is not accurate, without any doubt. |

DID NOT RECORD! | This was the second day in the 30-day period that Sleeptracker did not record any sleep for me. |
The Oura Ring was significantly more accurate than Sleeptracker in recording my time spent in bed. Moreover, it was significantly more accurate for me regarding the time I spent awake in the night. It is impossible to determine which device was more accurate regarding sleep stages, especially considering deep sleep is not actually defined by any consensus. On two nights, Sleeptracker failed to detect me as being in bed.
Here are my wife’s results:

Oura recorded the wake-up time as 7:27 AM. Sleeptracker recorded the wake-up time as 6:58 AM. Oura recorded 2hr 53min awake time, which was not accurate; Sleeptracker recorded 10min awake time, at the beginning and end of sleep, which is not accurate either, due to bathroom use throughout the night. |

Both devices had inaccuracies regarding the time we were in bed and time awake in the night; however, Sleeptracker app had the largest discrepancies. It’s possible that Sleeptracker was recording sleep when our cat walked across the bed, but only on my wife’s half, and interestingly, the cat prefers sleeping on my side of the bed. Another potential variable is that sometimes my wife will momentarily lie down on the bed to plug her phone into the charger, and perhaps Sleeptracker was recording that as “lying down in bed,” and when she got up moments later, the entire time was tracked as “sleep.” Either way, the recorded results were completely inaccurate.
Takeaways From My Comparison of Sleeptracker vs. Oura Ring
Again, the Oura Ring wins this battle hands down. I do not recommend the Sleeptracker for anyone since far better options exist on the market.
